Raising the Bottom

It doesn’t have to get bad before you decide to take stock and change course. Women in general love their wine, but do we pay attention anymore to what we role model? Are you someone who can’t wait to get home so you can open up a bottle of wine? Do you sip the evening away until it’s time for bed? If you can relate, I hope you’ll take a minute and have a listen.

I also share my strong opinions about what’s happening in the healthcare setting. The truth is that too many doctors, nurses and staff don’t understand addiction.

We’ve been conditioned to believe that if we have a problem or an illness we should seek medical help. But wait, not so fast!

Help Does Not Come from Wine

Some of the best help a person who wants to quit drinking and drugging can get will come from another person in recovery. It only makes sense to talk to someone who has been there, done that; someone who understands the nuances of the disease. The person who is not an addict or an alcoholic will miss the signs and make excuses for all sorts of unacceptable behavior, and they may empathize, a bit too much. In addition, medical professionals who aren’t intimately familiar with addiction are baffled by the disease, and yes, the addict’s behavior.

“If You Spot It–You Got It.”

The above sentiment is all too true. I can spot the alcoholic from across the room. Why, because it takes one to know one. I understand what it looks like. Another alcoholic will hear the whispers and recognize the subtle signs that nonalcoholic people miss. Are you the person who heads back to the bar three times while others are still nursing their first drink? What about that twisted thinking that makes you feel like the victim? Alcoholism is a disease of perception. Most of the time, we have it all wrong.

And least we forget, the stigma. When will we ever get past the notion that unless you’re the man or woman under the bridge, you can’t be an alcoholic?
